How to Fracture a Fluid

چکیده

W hat does it take to fracture a fluid? How hard and fast does the fluid need to be pulled in order to break? Ole Hassager, from the Technical University of Denmark, and colleagues [1] have tackled these challenging questions head-on by stretching fluids composed of polymer melts at sufficiently high strain rates to make the fluid break in the same way that a pane of glass would if pulled hard enough. The researchers found that as long as the strain rate was fast enough, fracture of the fluid followed. The overall strains that the fluids could sustain before breaking were both huge—over 250% of their initial size—and surprisingly reproducible.

Categorical fracture orientation modeling: applied to an Iranian oil field

Fracture orientation is a prominent factor in determining the reservoir fluid flow direction in a formation because fractures are the major paths through which fluid flow occurs. Hence, a true modeling of orientation leads to a reliable prediction of fluid flow. Traditionally, various distributions are used for orientation modeling in fracture networks. Although they offer a fairly suitable est...

Relationship between fracture dip angle, aperture and fluid flow in the fractured rock masses

Most of the Earth's crust contains fluids, and fractures are common throughout the upper part. They exist at a wide range of scales from micro-fractures within grains to major faults and shear zones that traverse the crust. In this paper, the stress-dependent permeability in fractured rock masses have been investigated considering the effects of nonlinear normal deformation and shear dilation o...

Fracture Dynamic Propagation Model of High-Energy Gas Fracturing for Casing Perforated Well

The onshore oil and natural gas industries of China have started a large-scale development when crude oil reserves have been difficult to recover. The stratum fracture modification is an indispensable measure to efficiently develop oil and gas fields. Hydraulic fracturing is the most important reservoir stimulation technique, but it is still faced with various problems such as the failure to fr...

A new conforming mesh generator for three-dimensional discrete fracture networks

Nowadays, numerical modelings play a key role in analyzing hydraulic problems in fractured rock media. The discrete fracture network model is one of the most used numerical models to simulate the geometrical structure of a rock-mass. In such media, discontinuities are considered as discrete paths for fluid flow through the rock-mass while its matrix is assumed impermeable. There are two main pa...

A Novel Integrated Approach to Modelling of Depletion-Induced Change in Full Permeability Tensor of Naturally Fractured Reservoirs

More than half of all hydrocarbon reservoirs are Naturally Fractured Reservoirs (NFRs), in which production forecasting is a complicated function of fluid flow in a fracture-matrix system. Modelling of fluid flow in NFRs is challenging due to formation heterogeneity and anisotropy. Stress sensitivity and depletion effect on already-complex reservoir permeability add to the sophistication. Horiz...
